Jump, the king of sea!A moving show that transcends the species barrier

Kamogawa Sea World is one of the main attractions of Granvista Hotel & Resorts. It is one of Japan’s leading aquariums where you can view a variety of marine life with the added attraction of a realistically reproduced ecological exhibition of the ocean world.

　Of all our offerings, the orca performance is the most popular activity at the aquarium. During this energetic show, the audience gets to watch as this glorious giant, whose body measures over five meters in length, swims and jumps high out of the water. A huge cheer erupts when the orca creates a splash so big it reaches the top floor of the seating area.

　It’s rare to find an aquarium anywhere in the world that rears orcas, and there are only two in Japan. Kamogawa Sea World’s orca family members include the oldest of the three sisters, Lavi (21), younger sisters Lala (18) and Lan (13), and daughter of Lavi, Luna (6).

“Just like humans, every orca has a different personality. Like most older sisters, Lavi is a reliable character,” says orca trainer Kanae Komatsu, who has teamed up with Lavi for many years.

　“Orcas learn quickly and easily recognize if the trainer is a newcomer or a veteran. I had a hard time being played by them when I first arrived. However, a relationship of trust was built as the time we spent together increased. Lavi is now an irreplaceable partner for me.”

　There are currently 10 members in the orca training team including Komatsu. They take turns in training the orcas, and the trainer who pairs best with the orcas takes the lead in the performances.

　An orca trainer spends most of their day at the pool. They begin their morning by checking the orca’s temperature, heart rate and respiratory rate, and then prepare for the show. Increasing the motivation of the orca is also an important job of the trainer.

　“Many people don’t know this, but the program of the show is different each time. In my case, I observe the compatibility between Lavi and the other trainer-orca pair, change the instructions every time, and try to be creative so that Lavi does not get tired of the same routine. The best tip for creating a good relationship with the orca is to enjoy what the orcas can enjoy.”

　Between shows, the trainers prepare meals for the orcas. The main meal is mackerel. The fish have been freshly caught so it’s important to carefully check that all fishhooks have been properly removed. After the feeding is done, the trainers round off their day by cleaning the pool and the audience seats.

　The orca show features dynamic movements. However, the best part of the show may be the moment when the orca returns to its trainer after the performance. It is a dazzling display of affection and connection as the trainer, smiling warmly, pats the visibly proud orca.

　“The orca understands when they are complimented. I love the moment when we come back together and see each other after the performance with the facial expression of ‘that was a fun program!’. Working together for all these years has led us to establish a trusting relationship. There are many performances that can be done only because the orca and trainer have spent a long time together.”

　Seeing the orca jump high in perfect harmony with the trainer’s gestures is moving because you can see the bond despite the species barrier. Audiences are always amazed to see the connection that’s evident between orca and trainer. As a result, this wonderful performance continues to draw a packed audience, time after time.
