01 Sapporo Park Hotel Opened Its Doors to Embrace a New Era of Internationalization in 1964
Sapporo Park Hotel first opened in 1964 under the name "Sapporo Hotel San-ai." At that time, Sapporo was buzzing with excitement over its bid to host the first Winter Olympics in Asia, and the opening of a hotel befitting Sapporo was eagerly anticipated by many.
The deep blue exterior of the hotel, which contrasts beautifully with the greenery of Nakajima Park, is adorned with 430,000 plates of Arita-yaki celadon tiles. The lobby features natural marble cut from raw stone in Italy, and the hotel is known for its luxurious amenities, including one of the largest banquet halls in Hokkaido and an underground bowling alley. After opening, in 1966, the hotel was renamed "Sapporo Park Hotel." Since then, it has welcomed numerous dignitaries from around the world, including Emperor Emeritus and Empress Emerita.
In 1972, Sapporo hosted the Winter Olympics, during which Sapporo Park Hotel was designated as the official hotel for the IOC headquarters. Since then, it has continued to be the venue of choice for numerous international conferences. While the hotel takes pride in its prestigious history, it also remains a beloved and approachable landmark in the community. "We take pride in offering soft and warm service to all our guests—that is the hallmark of Sapporo Park Hotel," says General Manager Masayuki Suda.
02 With 60 Years of Gratitude: Giving Back Through Various Initiatives
"Thank you. Onward Together with Sapporo." Under the slogan, Sapporo Park Hotel is celebrating its 60th anniversary with various special projects until March 2025. "We are planning not only products but also cultural events to express our gratitude for the past and to continue making history with the city of Sapporo in the future. We will also continue to focus on sustainable initiatives that contribute to the future," says General Manager Suda.
In celebration of the 60th anniversary, Sapporo Park Hotel is offering a special commemorative lunch for two at a special price of 6,000 yen, along with a restaurant lottery where guests can win accommodation or meal vouchers. Among the many events are a photo contest capturing Nakajima Park and the areas surrounding the hotel, and cultural events deeply embedded in the community, such as the development of menus loved by musicians, offered at the Terrace Restaurant Kitara inside the concert hall "Kitara." Additionally, the hotel is engaging in sustainable efforts to repair and rejuvenate historic tableware used throughout its history, contributing to CO2 reduction.
"To continue being a hotel loved by our guests in the future, it is important to create an environment where each staff member can work with pride and cherish their dreams," says General Manager Suda. Sapporo Park Hotel is now putting a strong emphasis on sustainable practices to ensure it remains a hotel that its staff can be proud of.
03 Natural Farming at Our Own Orchard: Taking on Urban Beekeeping on the Rooftop
As the world increasingly commits to achieving the SDGs, Sapporo Park Hotel has been engaging in forward-thinking sustainable initiatives for over a decade. One such initiative is the natural vegetable cultivation at their own farm, "GRANVISTA FARM SAPPORO."
Located about 20 minutes by car from central Sapporo, GRANVISTA FARM SAPPORO grows vegetables without using pesticides or chemical fertilizers. Vegetables nurtured solely by natural methods are characterized by their robust flavor. During the harvest season, these vegetables are used in the hotel's restaurant menus. "All staff members are involved to help with farm work. This is a valuable opportunity for everyone, not just those involved in cooking, to experience the importance of food," says General Manager Suda. Additionally, since 2022, the hotel has been practicing urban beekeeping on its rooftop and is dedicated to protecting bees.
Sapporo Park Hotel has embraced beekeeping, making use of the rich natural surroundings. Building on their experience in natural vegetable cultivation, the hotel recognized the essential role of bees in the growth of vegetables. With careful attention to safety, they have engaged in beekeeping and now offer the harvested honey to their guests.
"Until now, we have used it in breakfast dishes and sweets, but with the desire to share it with more guests, we have developed the 'Hokkaido Honey Nama Castella,'" introduces General Manager Suda. The new product, which can be shipped frozen to various locations, has already been well received.
04 To 70, 80, and Beyond 100 Years: The Enduring Charm of Sapporo Park Hotel
"60 years supported by local residents, and guests from across the country and around the world. Our gratitude to our customers and the local community is boundless. It is thanks to the hard work of the staff who have been with us since the beginning that we have built the trust of our guests," says General Manager Suda, who took office on the 60th anniversary of the hotel's founding, expressing his thanks to guests and predecessors.
With a unified heart, General Manager Suda and all the staff at Sapporo Park Hotel strive daily to enhance service and aim to be a hotel where guests feel they want to "come back here again." The hotel values the relationships and trust built over these 60 years with the local community and has set a significant goal to contribute to regional development through sustainable initiatives.
"We hope to continue and expand our beekeeping and GRANVISTA FARM SAPPORO activities in the future," General Manager Suda emphasizes with conviction.
To celebrate, Sapporo Park Hotel is hosting a lunch event titled "GRANVISTA FARM SAPPORO: Discover the Charm of Naturally Grown Vegetables," featuring vegetables from their GRANVISTA FARM SAPPORO. We are inviting 25 pairs (50 guests) of Granvillage members through a lottery. Don’t miss this opportunity to experience the hospitality of Sapporo Park Hotel, which begins with their commitment to vegetable cultivation.
